“For quite a while the king's soldiers shook their heads without understanding, as if the king saw the reality of their existence completely wrong. “Your problems,” each of them said fully convinced to Helgi, ”are not mine at all; I am contented - why should I care about some inflated fray which only disturbs my inner peace?” “These words of his soldiers brought Helgi to the limit of his tolerance; and in the end he did not know anymore whether he was dreaming, waking or sleeping; but nevertheless he did not give up: incessantly he kept on talking to his soldiers like to innocent lambs which do not want to know anything of war. “In the meantime Savala created new soldiers - armed with golden shields and swords. They shone like the gold of the sun; however, in their golden glistening armours and weapons permanently new silvery-white cracks appeared and closed again quickly while new cracks appeared at other places. These silvery-white gaps were flashed through by gleaming golden-yellow lightning, so that one had the impression that the shining sun was haunted by moon-bright thunderstorms. “And when, after immense efforts, Helgi had convinced every soldier individually to at least pretend fighting - just for show, quite playfully and without any obligation or useless exertion - to cheerfully attack the new warriors, his soldiers first of all had an innocent look at these golden men. “And how happy they were to see such friendly men in such splendid golden armour. The whole army of the king spontaneously rushed to the golden warriors and greeted them very friendly; then they told each other the most beautiful stories of their lives and made plans for a golden future together. “When Helgi saw this, he implored his soldiers, went to each one of them and asked them to attack the others - now that they were sitting before them as if unprotected, and chatting. “And when the king himself tried to become violent and attack one of these golden gleaming warriors, his very own soldier rose in complete indignation and said the king should keep quiet and leave their friend in peace; he should rather be under their protection, and he himself protected him like the apple of his eye; the king should not dare to create unrest. |
