The Contest of the Fire-Stormer
and the Ruler of Spaces

Protected by the full-moon night, which reflected in the sparkling dew of the mosses, Mani and Sol briskly walked up the hill, and soon they reached the third glade on the next terrace.
Here they saw a bright fire-shine. With a sparkling red-silvery club, set with rubies, a young man in red-silvery clothes drove a mighty column of fire in front of him.
As he blew into the flames, they flared up brightly, and sparks burst forth in all directions.
At the same time, above the sea of flames, violent hurricanes raged towards the edge of the wood.

There a fighter in blue-white clothes held his deep-blue shield against the approaching heat, which turned the round fire-catcher glow forth brightly.

Often the man hit upon his shield, whereupon it spewed a fierce noise against the pillar of fire, which at once winced as if scared, jerking a few times, and then finally rolled itself up before the shield-bearer like a peaceful cat, nestling against the shield, while turning bluish, and eventually crept into it full of meekness as if to seek protection.

Immediately however, a new high wave of fire swept along with unabated force, rushing fiercely towards the young shield-carrier, and threw itself with wide gaping fire-spitting jaws onto the red-shining deep-blue shield, recoiling at its short yell, and horrified, it finally crept - like the flame before - fawning and assuming a blue colour, into the melting, fading spaces.

Behind the fire-lit club-carrier Mani saw a giant with white clothes and a flaming beard.
He sat on a glowing throne, finely piled from many fires, and with clear and bright eyes he looked graciously at the fire-driver, and watched his craft attentively.

On the other side Mani saw another man in white clothes with a blue-white beard sitting on a swaying garland of tones.
To the dancing strains he swang like on twinkling crystals aloft, downward, and towards all sides, as if he sat on a tossing wave of crystal in the midst of a playfully moved, sounding sea. Merrily swinging on the waves of the tunes, he looked happily to his disciple, who was just taming another huge blaze, collecting the fire storms.

“Hardly anyone knows the names and the descent of these mighty rulers over the spaces, that permeate all the other elements so victoriously.
And even the sovereign of the world waters does not attribute them to the family of giants of which he is the highest ruler - although he certainly is a close friend of them and meets them full of reverence.
Some claim that Agni himself and his sons appear in disguise as the rulers of space and teach the art of sound.”

“On the opposite side, behind the club-beating fire-driver, you see a ruler over the realm of fire.
He is a close relative of Geirroed and trains the flame-throwing youth.
Like on all the other clearings of this ring, twelve ambassadors of Agni are assembled here as judges and give their expert precise judgement.”

“Our way now leads us on to a higher level of mental art - into the middle ring of the exercises of the mind. These exercises are concerned with the insight into the living and with the rule of the living within the elements.”
