The Contest of the Rain-Worker
and the Flame-Fanner

On the next forest-clearing Mani saw a very different, dramatic scene: huge clouds were brewing above the centre of the place. The sinister masses were flashed through by gleaming bright strokes of lightning each time when a young man, clothed in deep-blue and silver, pushed a bolt of silver, which resembled a hammer, with his arm against the clouds.
Then a mighty uproar rolled from the middle of his thunder-bolt deep into the clouds, thus producing there the day-bright flashing in the shimmering moonlight.

Sparks of silver burst forth from the deep-blue clouds, and huge masses of water poured down on the luscious lawn of the clearing, which was covered with flowers like with a carpet.

However, they were hurled back into the sea of clouds by the heated violence of a glistening fire, which raged just above the grass.

Thus the interior of the forest clearing appeared like the inside of a giant steam-boiler, which sat on a glowing-hot fire, and into which innumerable waterfalls gushed down from the heights.

The blazing heat was generated by a young man, clothed silvery-red, with his flame-sword.
With a light-blue shield, wrought with silver, he protected himself from the masses of water, that came rushing down.

His opponent held a similar shield of silvery-white brilliance against the fiery heat.
Above the two students a rainbow glistened, arching from one to the other.

Behind the fire-fanner, who kept on blowing vigorously into the glow, so that it flared up high, in the midst of a blazing flame there sat a man with a fiery beard, clad in white, on a glowing throne; and it seemed to Mani that all the glow of the world emanated right from this red shining beard.
With brightly shining, sparkling eyes the serene man followed the sword-play of his disciple.

“This is a nephew of the fire-giant Geirroed, the ruler over the realm of the blaze,” Sol explained.

“The fire giants administrate the forces of the fires in the world, and therefore, here on the island, they direct all the exercises which strengthen the student in his natural seizing of power over the forces of fire.
His student made up the magnificent flame-chair for him by means of the art he had mastered so far.”

“On the other side, behind the one who controls the thunderstorm and generates rain, you see a grandchild of the water-giant Agni sitting on the froth-sparkling throne, made from a wave; he advises the young lightning-thrower in the art of harvesting the rain.
At the beginning of the exercise this disciple too has prepared the splendid seat from a wave for this wise giant, with the help of the art he masters so far.”

“By the grace of the thunder-god Thor the water-giants know how to milk the heavenly cloud-cows, and this high skill manifests itself in the creating of rain.”

“The twelve men and women, whom you see assembled around the place of rain, are again high ambassadors of Agni, and they ensure - like in the previous place of practice - that the playful element dominates more and more over the element of fight.
At the same time they make sure that the floods of rain do not go beyond the clearing, lest they wash away the woods, and also that the fires remain within the clearing without scorching the delicate grass and the beautiful flowers.”

“Here too, the attention of the judges is first of all on the manifold mastery of the giants' forces by the fighters themselves, and thus focusses on the harmonious integration of the divine forces, on which the giants' forces rely.”
