Now they reached the third castle and entered it. Here again deep darkness received them, and again dazzling lightnings flashed intermittently, lighting up the infinite spaces of the night as bright as the day; and here too Mani swayed between sleep and confused desultory thoughts.

This time however she went all by herself to the right because she thought this was the proper way, the only way to continue.

And again her brother had to take her by the hand quickly so that Mani did not just hurry away; but still Mani once went this way, once that way - each time she woke up from her short deep sleep, awakened by the lightnings.

And when Mani began to pull stronger and almost bounced against one of the youths that went with them through the castle in so large a number, her brother began to sing again very quietly; immediately the unruliness in Mani's mind calmed and she let her brother lead her willingly.

Soon again they emerged from the castle and went upward on the next bridge towards the brighter and brighter gleaming golden palace.

“In the third tower, through which we just went, those mighty powers dominate which rule the waking state of consciousness,” explained Sol to his sister.
“They put everyone who has no power over his waking consciousness into the state of confusion as we know it from dream consciousness too.

“Therefore everyone unexperienced loses orientation in this tower, and the inner spaces of the tower turn into an endless labyrinth for him - like earlier in dream consciousness.
“He loses his way just like the dreamer, and does not find his way out of the watch-tower anymore.

Thus he cannot continue the journey by his own force and is entangled in his confusion - like the dreamer is caught in the experiences of his dream.

“This time however - in the waking consciousness which for the unenlightened rises from deep sleep just like the dream consciousness - the walker very strongly believes to know the direction of his way.

Thus he obstinately once heads this way, once that way.
