Sol
was not surprised when he heard the story of his sister; but he gave
no comment either. Instead he advised Mani, to go to a wise man on a
nearby island, who had taught him many skills, and to try there to get
a satisfying answer to her urgent questions. Now Mani wanted to waste no time and to set out right away. Sol, however,
explained to her that such a journey had its hardships and would mean
a stringent test of the sincerity of her pursuit. Sol agreed with a mysterious smile, but recommended a few necessary preparations. So they went to the magnificent palace-gardens and first of all picked two marvellous bouquets of flowers; in the orchards each of them filled a golden tray with delicious fruits. Finally they went to the treasury of the royal family where they took two white silk-handkerchiefs, richly decorated with fine embroideries, so beautiful as Mani had never seen before. They put everything into a wicker-basket which was woven from nine different woods. Carefully they closed the golden lid and took the basket straight to the harbour of the fortress. |
